Follow-up from Cllr. Ken Glynn

The following is the response from Cllr Ken. Glynn regarding the actions taken at the 2014 AGM of Ashefield Residents Assocation. Many thanks to Cllr. Glynn for the fast action!

I have just been informed that the manhole cover outside number 4 should be resolved in the next few days.

1- Can some no dog fouling signs be provided in the estate and poles if necessary.
WCC are supplying only 2 signs per estate. If the residents association require more they will have to pay for them. These can be arranged to be collected at the Reception and can be installed on existing poles.

2- Fencing along the C-Link as discussed-any idea when repairs will be done.
I will check what is involved here and arrange repair work as required.

3-Large Overgrown green area-Maybe I can bring in a deputation to discuss this matter.
I can met you and representatives of the residents association to discuss. Contact me to arrange a date and time.

4-Can we get the street cleaning machine in to entire estate and if I know the day they can advise residents to not leave their cars out on the road.
This can be arranged. It would be best to arrange it for the morning after an organised cleanup so that the residents can swept the footpaths onto the road the evening before.

5-Manhole cover outside number 4 on the front has dipped down and is quite dangerous.
I will have this checked out.

6-Can bin located near apartments entrance be re located to entrance of estate near green area which is dumped on regularly.
The MMD do not have the funding to supply new bins but we can look at relocating an existing bin as requested.

Kind Regards

Cllr.Ken Glynn

Annual contributions for the maintenance of Ashefield – letter from the Treasurer

Dear residents,

It is good to see the evenings getting longer and also the warmer weather arriving. However, it is now the grass growing season and that means more maintenance and grass cutting requirements.
As most of you already know, Ashefield estate was taken in charge by the council in 2007. This means that the County Council have taken responsibility for the estate’s upkeep and maintenance in a number of areas. The chief areas of the county council’s responsibility include

  • Maintenance of the Roads and Footpaths.
  • Public/Street Lighting
  • Water mains
  • Mainline Sewers.

Most other areas are outside the county councils area of responsibility. The most obvious one is grass cutting and general upkeep of the common areas.  Ashefield has some large open grassy areas and I am sure you will agree these offer a valuable amenity and play area for the estate’s children. The downside is that that the grass needs cutting to maintain these areas; and this is now the residents’ responsibility.

The cost of cutting the grass and general upkeep of the grass covered areas came to €1680 last year . There were other sundry expenses like waste removal, bin tags etc., that accounted for a further €100. The full accounts for last year are available online on this website.

To cover to the cost of the residents association have been collecting €30 per household.  The association also received a donation from the Mullingar Credit Union.  Thanks to the residents and other groups for their support in maintaining the estate. As you can see online, the income meets the outgoings with a small surplus carried forward to the following year.

In order to continue the grass cutting the residents from the association will be circulating around the estate in the coming weeks with a view to collecting a contribution of €30 per household. We realises that times are hard and living costs are climbing but your support is being requested once again this year. When broke down this €30 is approximately 60 cents per week, which I am sure you will agree is a modest sum considering the work it achieves.  This request is being made to all residents; either renting their home or as owners.  However if those renting their home feel that this request is better directed to their landlord, we would appreciate if they forwarded this message to them.

We would also like to thank Ms. Margaret Cavanagh for her work on the residents association over the last 11 years. Margaret has decided to step down after her years of hard work.  It is a challenging task that she has left us because Margaret handled most of the day to day stuff involved in the residents association. However, I am sure that we will be able to continue the work she has started.

So once again, sincere thanks to all the residents and community groups for their contributions and support.  We are sure that you will do your best to support us in our efforts to maintain our estate.

With Kind Regards;
Joe Gettings (Treasurer). J.gettings@ymail.com

Do you watch RTE television?

Do you watch RTÉ television and live in Ashefield? If so, we’re looking for help from people who rely on an antenna on their roof for their RTÉ television coverage  – not a Sky dish or cable TV service.

We want to find out how good the coverage is within the estate and whether you are using an indoor or outdoor antenna.

Why?

RTÉ’s free to air digital terrestrial television (DTT) service is set to launch to 90% of population by October 31st 2010. This will eventually replace the analogue TV service.

DTT trials are ongoing and we are being served by the RTÉ transmitter on Cairn Hill in Longford.

However, we want to estimate how well we can receive it. A valuable indicator is how well the existing analogue TV is being received. If you happen to be a trial user of the DTT service, even better – please tell us how you are getting on.

Can you help? Please comment below and include an indication of whereabouts you are living in Ashefield.

Bin tag offers

Latest Offer Update (Jan ’10): Allied Waste Management is offering two tags for the price of one. These are available at all the usual tag outlets.

2 waste tags for €7.50
2 recycling tags for €4

Expired Offers (Dec ’09):

Allied Waste Management is offering four bin tags for €20 as part of their Christmas gift pack promotion.

Given the 10% saving claims, it appears that this offer is for two green bin (refuse) and two blue bin (recycling) tags for €20. It’s not clear on their website but this will be confirmed soon.

The cost of buying two green and two blue tags together from Wallace Recycling is €22.  Allied Waste’s €20 promotion beats this by €2; enough for a Santa candle on the mantelpiece perhaps.
